Your domain name appears on every card, email and search result. It is worth getting right the first time because changing it later is costly.

1. Keep it short and easy to say

If you cannot say it on the phone without spelling it, it is too complicated. Aim for two short words or one distinctive word.

2. Avoid hyphens and numbers

They are easy to forget or mishear. “Two” versus “2” causes lost visitors.

3. Choose the right extension

.com is the most recognised worldwide. A country extension signals a local business. Newer extensions such as .app or .store can suit a niche. Whichever you pick, check the .com too, so no one confuses you with another business.

4. Check for trouble

Search for the name on social platforms and trademark databases. Read it as one run of letters to be sure it does not form an unfortunate word.

5. Think long term

Avoid names tied to one product or town if you may expand. A broad name ages better than a narrow one.

6. Register it in your own name

Make sure the registrant is you or your company, with an email you control. Never let a freelancer register it in theirs.

7. Protect it

Turn on auto-renew, enable privacy so your personal details are not public, and consider the common misspellings if your brand matters.

Next step

Make a shortlist of three to five names and check availability. We can register your choice and connect it to hosting and email.
